The Tobacco control bill was tabled before parliament yesterday for the first reading. The private members bill was tabled before parliament by Kinkizi East MP Chris Baryomunsi and seconded by the entire parliament.
This bill aims at protecting present and future generations from the devastating health, social, economic, and environmental consequences of tobacco use and exposure to tobacco smoke.
If passed into law would provide for the price increase on tobacco products through taxing them highly as an intervention in reducing demand for tobacco.
The speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga referred the bill to the parliamentary Health committee for scrutiny.
