The Uganda National Health Users and Consumers Organization have threatened to petition the parliamentary health committee over the disconnection of water at Mulago hospital by National Water and Sewerage Corporation.

According to the advocacy and network officer of Uganda national health users Ms Mable Kukunda it’s now a week ever since water was disconnected from Mulago hospital due to unpaid accumulated bills. She says that the health committee at parliament has to intervene and take immediate action and make sure water is reconnected back since its role is to deal with social services.

“This matter is very serious and it needs immediate intervention by the committee. We are surprised for the committee to keep a deaf ear ever since water was disconnected from Mulago national referral hospital for a full week .We also wonder why water and power have never been disconnected by both national water and UMEME in UPDF and police whether the bills are big or not .In hospital which saves people’s lives water is disconnected” Ms Kukunda asked.

She further confirmed that, water was disconnected in some departments of old Mulago including Uganda cancer institute, Mwana Mujimu ward, infectious disease institute and Makerere College of health science.
Over 70% of the children admitted at Mwana Mujimu had contracted diarrhea due to poor hygiene as reported by the administration .Lack of water also affected the preparation of meals for the children ward at Mulago hospital.

Relatedly, the executive director of the organization Ms Robinah Kaitiritimba has called upon government to take full responsibility of utilities of all government health facilities . When our reporter tried to contact Mr Enoch Kusasira the public relations officer of Mulago hospital for further clarification on the matter, he couldn’t pick the phone.
