Floods and landslides hit Burundi’s capital; Bujumbura yesterday causing death of at least 50 people.
Water and mud flooding down from hills outside the city washed away hundreds of houses, according to police. This caused death of people and destruction of property.
Police said several hundred homes were destroyed and more than 100 people injured in Bujumbura, which lies on the northeastern shore of Lake Tanganyika.
“The rain that fell in torrents overnight on the capital caused a disaster,” Security Minister Gabriel Nizigama told reporters.
“We have already found the bodies of 51 people killed when their houses collapsed or were swept away,” he said.
The torrential rain fell for 10 hours overnight and caused widespread power cuts, AFP news agency reported
