A female pastor duped Sheikh Shaban Mubajje of Sh1.2 million after pretending to convert into Islam and receiving the money.
Norah Nagudi on Saturday said that she had converted to Islam at Nashirungu Primary School in Sironko district but after receiving the money, she disappeared.
During a thanks giving ceremony for Mbale resident district commissioner, Umar Nangoli who had converted to Islam, Nagudi was introduced to the congregation as the recent convert into Islam and wanted to be prayed for. The master of ceremonies said that Nagudi had the previous night called one of the local radio stations and claimed to have converted into Islam but wanted to be prayed for by the chief guest, Sheikh Mubajje.
Dressed in a hijab, Nagudi was led to the front ground accompanied by three unidentified ladies who were also dressed in hijabs. After announcing her decision to be a Muslim, she was applauded by a loud Allah Akbar from the crowd. “In 2007, I started fastingw ithout the knowledge of my husband and even woke up in the night to pray. I used to eat half a chapatti and a cup of water but later, my husband discovered and withdrew all his support,” Nagudi narrated her ordeal. With seven children, Nagudi said life became harder without her husband’s help.
After sweetening the appetites of the listeners, she was urged to finish her sad story. After finishing her story, there was a fundraising to help Nagudi get money to start a business for her family. She said she needed sh1.2 million and it was collected for her. Before leaving, she was urged to give shahadah, a testimony of new believers that they believe in one God and accept Prophet Muhammed as God’s messenger.
After being given the money, Nagudi disappeared and when called to give shahadah by Sheikh Mubajje, she was nowhere to be found.
