A Saudi Arabian preacher has been sentenced to eight years in prison and 800 lashes for torturing and killing his five -year- old daughter.
The court in Hawtat Bani Tamim, 160 kilometers south of the capital Riyadh also ruled on Monday that Fayhan Al Gamdi, a self-proclaimed preacher, pay Luma’s mother, his ex-wife, SR 1 million in blood money.
Under Saudi laws, the mother had the right to ask for blood money instead of the death penalty for the defendant.
“The girl’s mother ceded her original request to sentence the father to death,” Mohammed Almadi of Saudi Arabia’s Human Rights told CNN.
Al-Ghamdi’s daughter, Lama, was admitted to King Saud Hospital in Riyadh in March 2012 after suffering extensive injuries, including broken ribs, a crushed skull, bruising and burns. Family, activists and officials say she died of her wounds in late October last year.
The case caused international outrage once it made headlines in February.
