A pig bit off the nose of a one week old baby in Bunjuzi Village, Nabigasa Sub-county in Rakai District.
At around 2pm, the mother of the baby, Prossy Nakidde went to kitchen to prepare food and left the baby lying on the mattress in the living room. According to family members, as an old woman was passing by the home, she heard the baby crying and when she drew closer to see what the problem was, she found the pig eating away at the baby. She allegedly shouted for help but by the time the pig had gone off, the baby’s nose, mouth and fingers had been eaten by the pig.
The pig is said to have escaped from a pole where it had been tethered and entered the house whose door was wide open. Because of the incident, the baby’s mother, Nakidde wanted to drown herself in a village well but before she would reach, she fainted. After calming down, she and her husband took the baby to Masaka Referral Hospital.
The baby is currenltyin critical condition.
LC1 Chairman, Matia Mukasa said it was unfortunate that many residents rear pigs but do not want to keep them enclosed and some are seen eating crops in other people’s gardens.
Ms Florence Gumisiriza, the medical director of Masaka Referral Hospital, said that the baby needs plastic surgery and she will be referred to Mulago Hospital in Kampala. She also said that the baby did not contract any infection.
