Kampala city alone has a total of 6,270 prostitutes operating according to a new study.
The study which was conducted by Alliance of Mayors and Municipal Leaders on HIV/Aids in Africa and commissioned by Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) noted that of the over 6,000 prostitutes, 900 are male while 5,370 are female.
The report went on to add that 21% of the customers are married and do not use condoms which is one of the reasons as to why the HIV prevalence in the country is still high. “We are sustaining so many marriages; when there are disagreements at home, men come to us, we comfort them and they go back home when they have cooled down,” the report quotes one prostitute.
Dr. Denis Muhangi of Makerere University was the lead researcher of the study which was conducted in May.
During weekdays, according to the report, 3,580 female prostitutes are in operation but during the weekends, the number reaches 5,370.
HIV is highest in prostitutes at 45% compared to the national rate of 7.3%. It is reported that 400 people get HIV daily and 10% of the infections are attributed to prostitutes.
