More details about the corrupt nature of UPDF commanders in Somalia have been revealed. The revelations emerged in a meeting between president Yoweri Museveni and fresh returnees from Somalia at Singo army training school in Nakaseke district on Thursday.
The president who is currently investigating recent claims of U.S officials that Ugandan army commanders are ‘thieves’ had secret talks with low cadres and learnt that there had been theft of army logistics by army commanders and corruption in the award of contracts to deliver supplies.
He discovered that the commanders make deals with contractors and get a lot of money in return. One official revealed that commanders demanded money to influence the award of army contract adding that one commander earn over $50,000 (Shs 130m) over the delivery of a contract.
The soldiers also lamented that they ate one meal a day, which was of very poor quality. Museveni who was disturbed by the accounts of the returnees promised a tough action against those who will be found guilty .
He lamented that the conduct of the commanders is tarnishing the image of UPDF, a force credited for helping restore sanity to war-torn Somalia.
In August, the commander of the Land Forces, Maj Gen David Muhoozi Kainerugaba , headed to Somalia to investigate the corruption allegations.
