19 immigrants have been arrested for operating business without working permits.
The arrests are part of an ongoing operation by the ministry of internal affairs. They were arrested from Nabugaba in Kampala yesterday.
Of the arrested are five Chinese, two Ethiopians, one Congolese and Indians. While addressing journalists at the Internal Affairs offices, principal legal officer Ludovic Kamugisha said this was one of the routine operations conducted by the department. “The 19 we found were engaging in trade like selling shoes, cosmetics, phones and other electronics,” he said, adding that those arrested would be screened. “Those found with valid documents will be released while those without the required documents will be prosecuted, fined, or deported,” he said.
“When you come in as a visitor, you are not allowed to engage in any activity, come as a visitor stay. Enjoy yourself and leave but don’t engage in any work paid or not paid,” he added.
The Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control, through its inspection department, arrested 19 suspected illegal immigrants.
