A woman trapped in an abandoned well for 15 days managed to survive on rainwater and corn until she was rescued.
The Chinese woman was found at the bottom of the well in China’s Henan province where she had been trapped for 15 days. 38-year-old Su Qixiu was trapped in a well hidden from view by corn plants which was one metre in diameter and four meters deep with smooth walls which made it difficult for her climb out.
According to a report, when she was found, Su was “scarily skinny”. The corn she fed on she was lucky to have since she was carrying it when she fell into the well while rain which fell twice provided for her water.
Su was first noted missing by her family when she did not return from picking medicinal herbs. Her cries for help were heard by villagers who had gone to harvest corn and came to her rescue.
Su fell in the abandoned well in Zhongfeng Village in Henan province on 1 September according to local Chinese media. “There was nothing [in the well], [so I] ate a bit of raw corn and called for help every day,” Ms. Su said after being rescued. “I spent every day hoping that someone would walk by and rescue me. I called out every day, and although there was no response, I did not give up.”
Su’s husband, Li Qunming said of his wife’s loss of weight, “She was originally 115lb (52kg), now she’s so thin I’m afraid she may not even weigh 80lb (36kg),” he said. “Although Su did not have any obvious injuries, she still could not speak or eat. Function of her internal organs has not recovered, but she is in stable condition and receiving fluids,” the local media said.
