The Speaker of Uganda’s parliament, Ms Rebecca Kadaga has been elected Chairperson of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians – International (CWP).
In an election held in South Africa, Ms Kadaga got 68 votes beating Lisa Baker of western Australia who came second with 29 votes.
Kadaga, the first woman to hold the position of Speaker in Uganda’s parliament, will serve for a three year term.
Founded in 1911, the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians Association (CWP), a sub-structure of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association aims at promoting democracy and good governance among its member countries.
The CWP is made up of 175 members from national, state and provincial parliaments in Commonwealth countries.
