Teachers in three districts, Kayunga, Buvuma , Mukono, Soroti and Buliisa have returned to class, detaching themselves from a countrywide strike over a 20% salary increment to teachers.
The teachers in Mukono ,Buvuma and Kayunga met the State Minister for Education, John Chrysostom Muyingo over the weekend.
Muyingo told the teachers that government desires to increase the teacher’s salaries but it’s still constrained.
My humble request is to have you go back to class .The government would want to give you the 20% increment ,but it only has the desire with no ability to do so” Said the minister. The minister added that government will address the issue of salaries as it has been with other requests presented by the teachers.
The teachers thanked the minister for understanding the teacher’s problem and his efforts to have government respond to their salary increment request. They also thanked him for not issuing threats of dismissal.
In Bulisa district the teachers returned to class on Monday after they met the Minister of Bunyoro Affairs ,Earnest Kiiza on Sunday.
Most schools in Kampala have, however, remained closed in a continued campaign to force government increase their salary by at least 20%.
