A 65- year- old man in Mutare, Zimbabwe was ordered to pay three cows as penalty for constructing his own grave ,which is contrary to tradition .
Clever Mureyani of Buwerimwe Village in Chief Zimunya constructed a wonderful grave in a vegetable garden adjacent to his homestead. The grave is six feet deep, perfectly plastered with cement and Mureyani fits in well,Nehanda Radio Reported.
It also has a pillow on the upper end to ensure that he is laid there comfortably when he dies .
Mureyani threatened to commit suicide after Chief Zimunya, on Sunday, ordered him to pay three cows and to demolish the grave.
Mureyani became furious at the traditional court’s verdict. He described it as “harsh and inconsiderate” before threatening to commit suicide.
Chief Zimunya , however, insisted that Mureyani’s actions were detestable and can bring misfortune to his land if corrective measures are not taken. He described Mureyani as a “disgrace” who deserves no mercy.
One of Mureyani’s sons, asked by Chief Zimunya if he believed his father had ulterior motives in constructing the grave: “He is my father and I am obliged to respect all his decisions and wishes. We do not know if it is good or bad. He has his own reasons better known to himself.”
Mureyani denied being involved in witchcraft and being ritualistic.
