Kitgum councilors last week petitioned their chairman to name a road in the memory of the fallen Australian aid worker Irene Gleeson.
The councilors during a budget meeting for the year 2013/2014 noted that Irene Gleeson, who died of cancer at 68, was a blessing to Northern Uganda, more especially to Kitgum District.
The councilors want a road in Kitgum to be named after her .Irene Glesson died on 21 July 2013, after a yearlong battle with cancer.
After seeing the insurgency brought by the Lord’s Resistance Army in 1991, Irene Gleeson decided to stay in Uganda and founded the Irene Gleeson Foundation in Kitgum district.
Irene Gleeson then built and fully funded many projects such as full day care, Schooling, counseling and Medical care,5 schools and 8,000 children benefited through her initiatives.
She also opened up a Tertiary Training College for Young Adults, Medical Clinics and Malnourished Feeding Program, FM Radio Station ‘Mighty Fire FM’ all in Kitgum district.
Her work lives on through the Irene Gleeson Foundation (IGF) in both Kitgum and U.S.A.
