Government has mourned Eastern Uganda Bishop ,Emeritus Gershom Illukor saying  he was not only a religious pillar in the Teso sub region, but also a national leader who played a very crucial role in the pacification of Teso when it was engulfed in a senseless civil war in the early 90s.

The Bishop who passed away on Sunday was until his death ,also a Senior Presidential Adviser on Religious Affairs.

“Bishop Illukor has been a friend of NRM and indeed a friend to President Yoweri Museveni. The two leaders have had successful engagements that have helped develop the Teso sub region.” said statement issued by Emma Were Tinka the
Ag. Executive Director Uganda Media Centre

“The country will miss him and at this point we wish to extend our sincere condolences to his family, the Church of Uganda and the entire country.”

The Bishop will be laid to rest on Friday  at St Stephen’s Cathedral in Kumi district.

The Bishop was bitten by a deadly snake at his home in Kidongole, Bukedea on Friday evening.

He was rushed to a Mbale Referral Hospital for treatment, where he was pronounced dead on Sunday morning.

Geresom Ilukor served as Bishop of Soroti diocese from 1975 to 2000 retired after 25 years of service. He was born on March 2, 1935.
