Buhweju Woman MP Joy Kariisa Arinaitwe is going to be laid to rest today.
Mrs. Kariisa passed away on September 4th succumbing to a brain tumor on Wednesday at Nakasero Hospital. The deceased had been suffering from the tumor for sometime now and had traveled to and from India for surgery in the hopes of getting better. Her husband, Mr J.B Kariisa, was quoted in the media saying the deceased last made a trip to India in July for an operation.
Her death came at a time when Speaker Rebecca Kadaga won a seat on the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians – International seat. Following her death, Ntugamo Municipality MP Yona Musinguzi said, “She was such a joyful and lovely person who supported the cause of the young generation in Parliament. She will be dearly missed,” Mr Musinguzi said.
Mr Francis Mwijukye, an FDC Youth League member and resident of Buhweju, said of the deceased, “She was innocent, a young lady who nobody will tell you has ever stepped on their toes, and very reserved we really loved her. I was in the opposition when we were campaigning to go to Parliament but she never campaigned against me,” he said.
Parliament on Friday reconvened from recess to hold a special session in her honor. A public viewing of the body in the Parliament foyer was held at 9am and a requiem mass was held at Christ the King.
An overnight vigil was held yesterday, Saturday in Nansana before the burial which will take place at Buhweju. The burial is scheduled to take place on Sunday at 2:00pm.
