The junior minister of internal Affairs James Baba has confirmed that government has allocated 84 million shillings to procure sanitary towels to 1500 female prisoners including Draru.
“We have found the money in this year’s budget to cater for 1500 female inmates. The accounting officer for the Uganda police force has formally written to the committee of defence and internal Affairs about the matter.” Minister Baba confirmed.
This government commitment comes after the MPs threatened not to pass the budget of the ministry of internal affairs until they provide money for the procurement of sanitary towels for female inmates.
“Am happy that, the money has been found to procure sanitary towels for female prisoners. This will help female prisoners to protect the dignity of women so that they can sleep safely” Said speaker Kadaga.
“Government must understand that women issues need to be given a priority. We are tired of reminding government its responsibilities” Said Hon Fox Odoi.
Meanwhile Mbarara district woman MP Emma Bwoona noted that besides sanitary towels, there is also a concern about babies of the female prisoners. “Babies of the female prisoners suffer greatly the time their mothers are in docks. Government should find the way of looking after these babies because it’s not their fault for the arrest of their mothers. When mothers are arrested, these babies feed on posho and beans because they can no longer breast feed” She said.
