Last year, in September, a woman slipped into a coma and woke up three months later only to find out she was almost four months pregnant.
Gemma Holmes was driving a scooter in Hilperton, England, when she collided with a parked car last year. She apparently flew across a busy road and slammed into a lamp-post. She incurred several injuries including severe head injuries and a broken back. The 26-year-old was airlifted to the hospital; no one thought she would survive.
Three months later, she was still alive and she woke from the coma and that was when she was told she was almost 4 months pregnant.
According to SWNS.com, Holmes suffered amnesia as a result of the accident and couldn’t remember what had happened over the last three years, including how she had met her baby’s father. The child’s father was located, but he and Holmes have not reunited romantically.
“I was just in shock,” she said of receiving the surprising news. She was warned about keeping the baby due to health problems and the fact that she would also not be able to have any surgery on her back until the child was born, according to the Wiltshire Times. She however wants to keep the baby.
“I just thought that if this little baby inside me had managed to survive the awful crash, then he was meant to be,” she said. During her pregnancy, she didn’t take painkillers out of fear that the medication would harm her unborn child, thus enduring tremendous pain from her injuries.
Holmes gave birth to a bounding baby boy named Rueben Miracle Holmes via cesarean section. “I couldn’t stop crying when they first showed him to me, because he is my little miracle baby. I was just so happy to see him after everything we’ve been through,” she told SWNS.com.
Since she has finished giving birth, she will in a few months undergo the brutal procedure which includes breaking her back and place metal plates in it. She might be able to learn to walk again in about two and a half years. “Rueben is the best thing to ever happen to me. I may not remember how he came to me but I’ve got the rest of our lives to make up for that,” Holmes told Reveal.co.uk in May.
