As government sets to convene in a crisis meeting tomorrow to try and avert a planned country-wide strike by teachers demanding salary increment and to resolve a related crisis at Makerere University, the speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga has directed the minister of education and sports Jessica Alupo to take immediate action on the demands of students of Makerere University over the matters at the University.

Speaker Kadaga made this directive while receiving the petition from the students of Makerere University at the floor of parliament this afternoon tabled by Rukingiri municipality MP Roland Mugume.The students demand that government take consideration of Lecturers demands.

The students in their petition also tasked government to open the University immediately.

The speaker of parliament  forwarded the matter at the appropriate committee in parliament of education and sports chaired by Mityana district woman MP Sylvia Namabidde for further scrutiny.

Last week Makerere University students led by the guild president, Anna Adeke Ebaju stormed parliament with their petition through the shadow minister of education Franca Akello  seeking for parliament’s intervention.

Ms Adeke who is the varsity guild said that the issue of salary increment has been on for a long time and therefore the minister should have by now got a solution.
