A pump attendant at Mogas petrol station in Masaka has been arrested for his alleged involvement in theft of over 21 million shillings from the petrol station.
The suspect has been identified as Steven Oweyesige, a resident of Kijjabwemi village, Kimaanya Kyabakuza Division in Masaka district. Working with two accomplices still on the run, Oweyesige allegedly attacked the petrol station.
The assailants were armed with a gun which they used to put the pump attendants on duty at gun point and steal the 21 million shillings.
Masaka Mogas petrol station manager, Mahad Wamala said the assailants managed to steal 9 million shillings from his office before moving on to the managing director Richard Mbegire’s office where they stole another 12 million shillings.
The District Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Directorate (CIID) Frank Ntankovu says that the motorcyclist who took Oweyesige to his hide out at Katafaali in Kimanya, Kyabakuza division in Masaka tipped off police after getting suspicious.
Ntakovu says that the keen motorcyclist told police that he was surprised to see Oweyesige leaving the petrol station at night the same night the fuel station was robbed yet Oweyesige is known to be a day time worker.
Ntakovu says that police has managed to recover 19 million shillings from Oweyesige’s room and is still looking for the missing 2 million shillings believed to have been taken by Oweyesige’s accomplices.
Oweyesige is being held at Masaka Central police station as he waits to face charges of theft.
