By Emmanuel Omona

The police in Gulu have begun to sensitize local residents on the dangers of early marriages which they say has become so common with primary school girls.

The police say that the vice has hindered the education of many learners as many of them are married off before they complete their primary level.

Corporal Norman Onegiu, the Police community Liaisons Officer said that the vice is common with primary school girls.

“Most of them are married off before they complete their primary level”, Onegiu explained.

Onegiu adds that they have also realized that most of the parents are marrying off their daughters as soon as their breasts have shot out.

He blames it on the biting poverty, over 20 LRA Insurgency and lack of responsibilities by some parents.

“Some parents are too poor to look after their own children and the only option is to marry them off”, Onegiu explained.

The police Liaisons officer warned that it is illegal for parents to marry off their daughters before they reach 18 years.

He warned that the law will deal with any parent who is found guilty.
