Traders, businessmen and companies that have for long defaulted payment of ground rent in Mbale were yesterday evicted from their shops and premises as the town council began a crackdown on defaulters.
The operation affected over 80 big institutions, retail shops and wholesale shops. While addressing the press conference after the operation at the Mbale municipal council offices yesterday, the L.C3 chairperson for Industrial division, Hajji Maasa Musa said the operation was carried out in order to enable the council to recover over shs3 billion that had been lost in uncollected property rent for the last three years.
Giant defaulters that were identified included Uganda Revenue Authority, Trust Bank, Standard Charted Bank, Orange and many others. The chairperson also disclosed that the operation forced some of the defaulters to start paying.
The Mbale Municipality Town Clerk, Mr Paul Omoko said that the defaulters had taken five years without paying the rent.
