Tax collectors recruited locally by Malaba Town Council yesterday stormed the office of the Council’s treasurer and locked him in his office. The irate tax collectors were demanding for shs11Million in arrears that the council hasn’t reportedly paid since June.
The aggrieved who have since been employed to collect taxes from the trailer parking yard stormed the council offices, besieged the building, locked the accused in his office and later took the officer, Mr Gabriel Ochwo, the council’s treasurer hostage as they demanded for the payment.
Uganda Picks was able to verify the rioting supervisors as Mr Opolot Joseph Ozoo, Mr Amir Raphael, Mr Ekiring Francis and Mr Padde Patrick. They aggrieved said that the council owed them over Shs11Million for the last two months.
One of the four supervisors who spoke to the press said that they were hired in May this year for two months and each of them was supposed to earn Shs320,000 every month while working at the parking yard. He also said that each junior officer was supposed to earn shs280,000 per month.
By press time, Mr Ochwo together with the town clerk, Mr Opolot Philip Gonza had been forced to draw a cheque worth shs11.8 million without the authorization of the council’s authority.
It is said that although the council last month received Shs390million from URA as arrears for property rates, the tax collectors equally remitted shs70million this but the money was allegedly withdrawn and spent within a week without proper accountability.
