In a bid to champion the fight against hygiene related diseases, officials in Uganda’s eastern district of Amuria have initiated a campaign that will see all leaders without latrines in the district exposed. The officials argue that leaders ought to be role models who should steer their people by example.
This move has been inspired by Mr Justine Otai, an official who works at the Health Ministry but hails from Amuria. Otai said that such leaders when discovered will have their names announced over the radios, hung on notice boards across the district and read in community meetings. He also said that the activity will be funded by Uganda Sanitation Fund.
Statistics have revealed that percentage ownership of latrines in Amuria has slightly risen from 25% to 53% between 2010 and 2013. However, officials say that this percentage increase is minimal and it should be ensured that by 2020 it will be at 100%.
