The parliamentary committee of education has decided to halt the appropriation of shs5b for Uganda National Teachers SACCO.
The decision was reached during the meeting between members of parliament on the education committee, ministry of education officials and Uganda national teacher’s union leadership (UNATU)
The chairperson of the committee Sylvia Namabidde said that for the committee to appropriate the said money, the ministry of education together with UNATU should first give parliament a commitment on how the money will be managed.
She also noted that the two should first sign a Memorandum of Understanding as a guiding document on how the money will be supervised and how it will be distributed to the beneficiaries.
The minister of state for primary education, Kamanda Bataringaya conceded not having reached an agreement with UNATU but said that the ministry is going to do everything possible as soon as possible for teachers to receive their money.
According to Nebbi district woman MP Christian Acayo , the leadership of UNATU SACCO does not have a national outlook and it should be checked before they even receive money from government.
During the financial year 2013/2014 budget government allocated shs5bn for the teachers SACCOS which will be managed by UNATU.
