The Gulu Resident District Commissioner, James Navinson Kidega has threatened to arrest officials who are extorting money from Veterans in Gulu district.
“I call upon all the Veterans to stop paying that money and if there is any official still getting money from the veteran, they should be reported as soon as possible”, Kidega urged.
Kidega’s warning comes at a time when the Veterans are updating their files in Gulu town and complained that they are being charged Shs 500/= to 1,000/= for unknown reasons.
The Veterans claimed that they were not given a receipt for the money they were paying.
“They are charging us between Shs 500/= and Shs 1,000/= and they do not want to give us the receipt when we ask them”, one of the veterans explained.
Another veteran also explained that, “They do not consider the poverty we are living in. We come from far distances to get our files updated”.
But an Official who preferred to be anonymous said that they were charging only to recover the cost of photo copy of the missing documents.
“We are only charging Shs 500/= to cover for the cost of a photo copy of the missing documents and we give it to the veterans. Most of them have lost their documents”, the official explained.
For over 2 weeks now, veterans in Gulu district are updating their files to access their payment which the president said would be done as soon as their documents are verified.
