Six men in Uganda’s Eastern district of Serere have been arrested in connection with the death of a colleague during a drinking competition that was held at Mulondo Landing site on the shores of Lake Kyoga over the weekend. The competition was allegedly organized by a one Isaac Okello, a fisherman and business man at the landing site.
Mr Olupot Peter, the area LC1 Chairperson said that the organizer, Mr Okello had sold his plot of land and wanted to exhibit to his colleagues that he was capable of making them drunk. He allegedly tasked the contestants to find whoever could drink fourteen glasses of Waragi in order to be crowned a champion.
The deceased, Mr Robert Igulot allegedly fell down dead soon after successfully downing the fourteen glasses of the portent drink.
The Serere district OC CID, Mr Henry Akera said that the police had arrested the five in connection with the death and that they would be charged with murder.
“We suspect the man could have been poisoned and we are still investigating that. We will arraign them before the courts of law upon successful completion of investigations,” Mr Akera said.
