Government intends to impose a forced holiday to all fishermen across the country.
This was confirmed by the state minister of fisheries Ruth Nankabirwa while appearing before parliamentary committee on agriculture chaired by Kakuto county MP in Rakai district Mathias Kasamba.
Minister Nankabirwa noted that, this holiday intends to make lakes rest to rejuvenate from too much pressure from fishermen.
“We are going to deploy police and enforcement officers on all lakes to make sure no more fishing is taking in place once this holiday is declared”.
“We want fishermen to give space to lakes to allow the fish to grow mature to avoid immature fish” Minister Nankabirwa noted.
The legislators on the committee tasked the minister to explain about the activities the ministry established for fishermen to undertake during fishing holidays.
The minister said that, there are no alternatives for fishermen to be instituted by government.
“Many farmers waiting for harvesting time even fishermen should also rest and wait for the holiday to expire because most of the fishermen are migrants on the lakes. They should go back to where they came from to engage in other activities like agriculture as the holiday expires” The minister added.
“We have not yet decided on the specific date about the holiday but we want it to be implemented within this financial year” She confirmed.
