At least 100 fishermen are homeless after fire burnt down a landing site in Kalangala destroying property worth millions of shillings.
The incident happened at Kazebubaga landing site in Bufumira Sub County.
Kalangala Uganda Red Cross Society Branch Manager Ibrahim Ssenyonga, who visited the scene said he counted 64 houses which were completely destroyed by the fire.
He says at least 100 fishermen are now homeless.
According to Ssenyonga, the affected fishermen are now sheltering at the local church and video halls. He however says Uganda Red Cross plans to provide the affected fishermen with non-food items this week.
Kalangala District Information officer Isaac Mugera, says they suspect the fire could have been sparked off by fuel.
He claims that preliminary findings show that in one of the destroyed houses, there were several jerrycans of petrol and Kerosene.
He explains that they have also found that the same house which stored highly inflammable products had owners cooking just nearby.
Greater Masaka Region Police Spokesperson Noah Sserunjogi, says a police team from Kalangala was sent to the area to investigate the cause of the fire.
He however says no death has been registered so far.
