Democratic Party President Nobert Mao has said that the government should prioritize funding the education sector because in a competitive world, it is only the educated who can compete favourably on the labour market and also in transforming society.
Mao who was reacting to the closure of Makerere University suggested that the government should negotiate with lecturers before they are awarded contracts.
He called on government to increase the budget for education and reduce that for public service in order to raise enough money for the lecturer’s salaries in all public institutions of learning.
Several Lecturers at Makerere University under their umbrella body MUASA vowed never to teach until a 100% salary increase is attained which led to the indefinite closure of the institution.
