U.S. soldier who leaked vital information to Wikileaks, Bradley Manning is going to undergo hormonal therapy and change to become a woman as he begins serving his 35 year prison sentence.
Manning wants to change and become a woman and yesterday, a day after being sentenced to 35 years in prison, said he is going to begin undergoing hormonal therapy to help him change into a woman. He changed his name from Bradley to Chelsea saying he wants people to know who he really is.
The 25-year-old announced his decision in a written statement provided to NBC’s “Today” show, asking supporters to refer to him by his new name and the feminine pronoun. “As I transition into this next phase of my life, I want everyone to know the real me. I am Chelsea Manning. I am a female. Given the way that I feel, and have felt since childhood, I want to begin hormone therapy as soon as possible,” said the statement was signed “Chelsea E. Manning.”
Manning’s defense attorney David Coombs in an interview said he hoped Manning’s request for therapy will be accepted. “If Fort Leavenworth does not, then I’m going to do everything in my power to make sure they are forced to do so,” Coombs said. Attorneys had presented evidence of Manning’s struggle with gender identity, including a photo of the soldier in a blond wig and lipstick sent to a therapist.
