The Gulu woman Member of Parliament, Betty Aol Ocan has criticized the government for compensating the Acholi war claimants with little money.
Aol argues that the Shs 200,000/= paid per cow was very little and that it does not make sense.
“The claimants have been wasting their money on accommodations, food, transport and other expenses and you pay them only Shs 200,000/=. This is not being serious. After all these years of waiting”, Aol wondered
She added that the government should have paid more money since some of the claimants have been coming from as far as 60 Miles to update their documents for the compensation.
Some of the claimants told Uganda Picks that they money were also being deducted by their officials for unexplained reasons.
John Ojwiya of Omoro sub County in Gulu claimed that he has been moving in Gulu town for over 2 years to get his animals compensated but was shocked to find some of his money deducted.
“I have been moving here for many years to get compensation of my cows but they have deducted Shs 66,000/ from each of my cows”, Ojwiya explained
George Opio the Publicist Secretary of the Acholi war Debt Claimant Association could not be got for comments because his mobile phone was switched off by press time.
There are only 9,340 claimants compensated in Acholi region out of over 20,000.
