The speaker of parliament has called upon political leaders at all levels to join the fight against climate change to mitigate its negative effects on the population.
During the launch of a five year strategic plan for the Parliamentary Forum on Climate Change and the Climate Change Expo in the CHOGM gardens yesterday .Rebecca Kadaga asked MPs and other political leaders to be exemplary in this campaign.
“Climate change is real. It’s our responsibility as leaders to live by example and plant trees as we rally the communities to join in. I think we should have more regular tree planting campaigns,” she told exhibitors and participants at the Climate Change Expo.
Speaker Kadaga decried the widespread use of firewood as a source of energy at the cost of depleting the environment.
“I will be happy to see real change in peoples’ lives. Each homestead should have a renewable energy stove and this will save the Women and Children from the side effects of smoke emitted by burning wood in the kitchens,” she said.
The one day climate change Expo brought together exhibitors championing the use of renewable energy sources.
