An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 with a depth of 20.5km swept through parts of Hoima district on Tuesday afternoon, forcing some residents to flee their homes.

The earthquake majorly hit Kigorobya Sub-county, 54km North West of Hoima Town.Kigorobya sub county lies near the western rift valley and Lake Albert.

Houses in this area, mostly those made of mud and wattle along the lake shores, and old houses developed cracks while some got destroyed.

This is the second severe earthquake to hit the region in two months .Another earthquake measuring 5.0 with a depth of 23.2km occurred in April this year.

The region also suffered a similar earthquake in March 2011.
