The president of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has directed the ministry of Health together with local governments to fire all the Male mid-wives.
The president made these directives at the state of the nation address held at Serena Hotel.
Mr President says that male mid-wives cares expected pregnant mothers from attending Health centre’s to give birth.
“I have had that pregnant women don’t want to go there because they fear to be handled by male mid-wives “In culture a woman is supposed to be handled by a fell woman. The system of male to work on women should immediately stop. I urge the ministry of Health to work with local government to sort out this issue” The president directs.
Mean while the president said that there are continued programme of providing safe water is a crucial element in disease elimination.
“I do not know where the water-borne diseases belong. Do they belong to hygiene or do they belong to their own category? The Ministry of Health will have to help me on this because they contribute 20% of the sicknesses.” The president said.
He also talked about the residual percentage of diseases and traumas include accidents. “These accidents are caused by reckless driving which contributes 20% to the hospital cases”.He added.
He further said that since 1987 government started tackling the issue of the human resource development by launching Universal Immunization with vaccines against six preventable diseases including measles, polio, tuberculosis, tetanus, whooping cough and diphtheria.
“We have recently broadened the list to eight (8) vaccines, by adding the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) Vaccine and Pneumoccal vaccine (PCV)” He said.
He added that the additional diseases to be prevented by immunization are pneumonia, diarrhea, meningitis, human papilloma virus (HPV).
“ If the Ugandans, individually and/or collectively, could add hygiene, nutrition and personal discipline (e.g. avoiding alcohol, smoking and obesity), the total disease burden eliminated would amount to 80%”Said the president.
