Shortly after Nelson Mandela’s family members met at his family’s home on Tuesday over his deteriorating health , someone parked a machine-operated digger at what will become his gravesite.
The digger was delivered by truck and it is another sort of tasteless reminder that the 94-year-old might not survive the lung infection that has left him in critical condition.
Mandela has been in a South African hospital for the past 19 days. South African Archbishop Thabo Makgoba visited the hospital after writing a prayer that he read to Mandela’s family. “And may your blessing rest upon [him] now and always,” Makgoba said. “Grant him, we pray, a quiet night and a peaceful, perfect end.”
Meanwhile business Standard reports that Mandela’s grandson Mandla Mandela who is the head of the Mvezo Traditional Council, wants him to be buried at his birthplace in Mvezo village while the rest of the family wants to respect his wish to rest next to his children.
The disagreement came when Mandla exhumed the bodies of his father Makgatho,Uncle Thembekile and Aunt Makaziwe from the family grave at Mandela’s homestead in Qunu and reburied them at the birthplace in 2011. These three bodies were Mandela’s children from his first wife Evelyn.
