The police in Soroti are still investigating circumstances under which a student of Teso View Secondary School, Mbale, died in her home village following an attempted abortion.
Scovia Apule, 24, a resident of Kamuda Sub County in Soroti district was found lifeless in her hut drenched in a pool of blood with a six months old foetus ‘peeping’ through her genitals; a clear indication that she was attempting to abort the pregnancy.
Ms. Grace Akure, the mother of the deceased said that she had not discovered the girl’s pregnancy and believes that she was trying to abort it in order to hide it from her.
“She came back home for holidays on Friday while I was still at my place of work. I had not taken time to closely examine and talk to her about school life and I was shocked when I got her dead in her hut,” Ms. Akure said.
The Soroti OC CID, Mr. Wasswa Ayub confirmed that the girl had allegedly died of over bleeding and police was investigating if there was some ‘assistance’ rendered during the abortion.
“We are still investigating whether there was some external aid to the act and we will interrogate family members closely,” Wasswa said.
Reports from Soroti Regional Referral Hospital where the body was taken for s post-mortem indicated that the deceased lost her life due to severe bleeding in the process of abortion.
