David Beckham yesterday announced that he had officially retired from active sports, in particular football after having a career spanning for two decades.

The 38 year old first announced his plan to leave L.A Galaxy last year in December although at the time, he did not hint on whether he was going to retire or not. His decision to retire has left many saddened but grateful that he has had a fulfilled life as footballer.

England’s long-standing rivalry and Beckham’s own history with Argentina meant that his game-winning penalty against the South Americans in the group stage of the 2002 World Cup was one of his sweetest memories.
Beckham started dating Victoria Adams in 1997. They were dubbed “Posh and Becks” by the media. He proposed on 24 January 1998 in a restaurant in Cheshunt, England and got married on 4 July 1999 at Luttrellstown Castle in Ireland. Beckham’s teammate Gary Neville was the best man, and the couple’s infant son, Brooklyn, was the ring bearer. The wedding was was estimated to have cost £500,000.
Beckham made his professional career debut in 1992 at 17 playing for Manchester United and won the Premier League title six times, the FA Cup twice, and the UEFA Champions League in 1999 while with the club.

Beckham has been named FIFA World Player of the Year runner up twice. In 2004, he was named the world’s highest-paid footballer. He was the first British footballer to play 100 Champions League matches.

David Beckham is married to Victoria Beckham and they have four children, Brooklyn Beckham, Harper Beckham, Cruz Beckham, Romeo Beckham. In 2009, the couple’s joint wealth was estimated at £125 million.
