Today, Uganda is joining the rest of the world to celebrate the International Women’s Day under the theme “The Gender Agenda: Gaining Momentum”.

In Uganda, the day is going to be celebrated in Nakasongola district where the First Lady, Janet Museveni is going to be the guest of honor. There are 17 million women in Uganda currently, a factor which has seen them gain recognition in the country.

Uganda at the time is seeing to it that women’s right are upheld. To reduce on the gender based violence, MPs proposed the abolition of the bride price and instead term is as bride gift. In addition, they recently passed a no bride price refund by the family of the women even if the women leave them.

As part of the celebrations of the day, yesterday, Warid Telcom awarded the Woman of Substance Award in entertainment. The award was based on the women’s strong and smart musical career and inspiration. Julianna Kanyomozi, Judith Babirye, Noeline Kareeba of TASO Uganda and Dr Margaret Mungherera the new  head of the World Medical Association were among the women who were awarded.
