By Jane Nambi

Makerere University students have called for the help of the speaker of parliament, Rebecca Kadaga to help them with the new fees structure that has left many self sponsored students on edge over the fees.

The new fees structure requires that students pay at least 60% of the fees in the first weeks of the semester and make sure they complete the rest before the end of the semester.

Makerere-University-Main-buildingStudents say this new structure is not possible for them because they work to pay their tuition fees and it is unrealistic for them to apply such a fees structure on a public university. This same structure has been brought before by the previous acting Vice Chancellor, Baryamureeba but it failed because students could not act up. However, the new VC, Professor Sentamu Dumba. has brought it up again and the university administration intends to maintain it.

This policy is similar to the one applied at Uganda Christian University (UCU) although it is a private university.

Students protested the new fees policy in vain and some were arrested.

Now, students have sought the help of the speaker. Masindi representative in parliament took the matter into parliament.
