The medics at Mubende Referral hospital on Thursday went on strike protesting the arrest of their fellow staff member on allegations of taking a bribe from a deaf patient.
Philip Mukasa the central west police spokesperson confirmed that Mr. Kivilewo Lamecka the hospital nursing officer was arrested yesterday on allegations that he had asked for money from a patient he treated of rabies.
The patient allegedly gave 70,000 shillings to Kivilewo. The money was discovered by police which was tipped off by a friend .
The doctors and nurses yesterday camped at Mayor’s Gardens in Mubende town and vowed to call off the sit down strike only if their colleague is unconditionally released.
They argued that their colleague had over stayed in police detention without trial ,which is illegal.
The Mubende hospital administrator, Dr Edward Nkulunzinza, said that the management had planned to meet the striking staff and police to have the matter resolved by Thursday but this did not happen.
