A group of Members of Parliament have rebuked KCCA’s executive director Jennifer Musisi over the authority’s intention of taxing UPE Schools.
Kampala Capital City has the intention of taxing all income generating activities in UPE schools. This was revealed by the KCCA deputy spokesperson KCCA, Mr Robert Kalumba who says that the the move is still a proposal.
Kalumba told the press on Monday that the authority wishes to get 10% tax on these additional incomes of UPE schools as it tries to widen its tax base .
He said that some of these incomes include ,income these schools get from renting out playgrounds for weddings ,and from different advertisement.”Where does this money go? Do the students benefit in any way? ” Kalumba said
However ,the move has not been welcome among sections of MPs .They are determined to see that UPE Schools are not taxed by the authority.
Led by Kalungu West MP, Joseph Sewungu, the MPs argue that it would be unfair to tax the schools, some of which wholly rely on the revenue from these activities.
Peter Okeyoh (Bukooli Island) MP said that KCCA is shooting itself in the leg by taxing UPE schools.
The MPs have asked Jennifer Musisis to drop the idea.
