Koboko district woman Member of Parliament Margaret Baba Diri has encouraged couples in the country to ensure that they legalize their
relationships either by going to church and using traditional means to avoid problems that come along with cohabiting.
Baba Diri says that couples can’t continue giving an excuse of un affordable bride price to legalize their relationships.
Baba Diri further said that it is befitting to eliminate cohabitation from the marriage and Divorce bill to avoid conflicting with religious
leaders and other stake holders.
She said that there are many cultures that require a few gifts like chicken and sheep as an initial state of an official marriage which is
affordable.
Since the once shelved bill in 2009 was returned to the floor last Wednesday, the MPs have virtually disagreed on every single clause;
from cohabitation as a form of marriage, contract marriages, bride price to sharing of property by couples.
