Wrestling is going to be replaced in the Olympic Games after being dropped by the International Olympic Committee from 2020.
More games are now being considered back and among these are baseball/softball, squash, karate, sport climbing, wakeboarding, wushu and roller sports.
The IOC communications director Mark Adams told a news conference in Lausanne: “The executive board recommended that wrestling not be included on the list of 25 core sports and it now joins shortlisted sports vying for inclusion on the 2020 Olympics program as an additional sport.”
The decision on which sport should be added in the 2020 games will be made when the IOC meet in Buenos Aires in September 2013. The executive board studied a report from the IOC’s program commission which assessed each of the sports at last summer’s London Games.
Golf and rugby sevens will be part of the program for the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro after winning inclusion in 2010.
The IOC will also have to decide whether Istanbul, Madrid or Tokyo will host the 2020 Games.
