Mukono district is undertaking soil fertility trials at four sites in Kimenyedde and Nagojje sub-counties, with a view to identify ways to revamp  banana growing in the district.

This was revealed by Mukono District NAADS Co-ordinator , Prossy Zalwango during a recent  semi-annual NAADS review meeting for sub-county co-ordinators, farmers forum members and district production stakeholders at the district headquarters.

Ms. Zalwango said  that a district adaptive research team headed by the District Agricultural Officer is carrying out the trials on established banana gardens to evaluate economic sustainability of different soil management approaches in banana production by small scale farmers.

Major activities in the exercise include sampling and testing soil to establish availability of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, planting mulching grass, pest control measures, plot lay out and demarcation.
