The minister of Karamoja Affairs Janet Museveni has finally agreed to appear before the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament (PAC).
According to an official letter delivered to PAC ,the First Lady agrees to appear at the Accounts Committee but asks the meeting to be scheduled to another date. The letter dated Februaryy 5 ,was delivered the First Lady’s Permanent Secretary, Irene Kisaka
The letter states that the minister will not be able to appear on the date which was designed by the committee because of the earlier scheduled programs of which she can not readjust at a short notice.Mrs Museveni adds that she will be able to meet the committee at any other date after the 15th of Feb this year.
She has requested the committee write the specific issues MPs want to discuss with her such that the two parties can engage in a clear and structured meeting.
Yesterday MPs seating on public accounts committee disagreed on whether the minister should appear before the committee.
The committee wants the minister to come and answer auditor’s queries that she used PRDP Funds to travel eight times to Israel in one month.According to the auditor general’s report the First Lady used over143.6 million in travels abroad.
Relatedly the Senior Private Secretary to the Prime Minister ,Mr Ssali Joseph Mary has also written to the same committee informing MPs that the PM Amama Mbabazi has travelled to Cairo and will spend there 4 days there .
He added that if the committee can not be able to wait for him, the Deputy Prime Minister and the Deputy leader of government business in parliament is available on his behalf.
The Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi is wanted by the committee because his was also mentioned in the report to have used some of the money to buy a Mercedes Benz.
