The construction of Wandegeya Market will be completed in October 2013 as Kampala Capital City Authority continues to create more workspaces in the city.

A Press Statement from KCCA says UGX the 22b market will be equipped with fire detection systems, cold rooms, banks, clinics, basement parking lots, community halls, daycare centres, advertising boards, stalls, bars and restaurants.

Dr. Esau Galukande, KCCA’s Deputy Director for Production and Marketing says when complete, the market will help in extending amenities to the people as well as enforcement of trade order.

Complant Engineering Company, a Chinese firm is undertaking the construction.

Wandegeya market is one of the seven markets countrywide to be rebuilt under the Markets and Agricultural Trade Improvement Programme (MATIP-1), supported by the Government and the African Development Bank. The other Markets are in Lira, Gulu, Mbale, Jinja, Hoima, and Kabarole districts.

The programme is intended to benefit over 15,000 people who will operate in the markets, most of which were constructed in the 1950s and are in poor shape.
