The 9-year-old Mexican girl who gave birth to a baby girl last week was not actually aged 9 but rather 12, according to Mexican authorities.

The parents of the girl had previously said the girl was aged 9 but according to authorities in Jalisco, Mexico, tests carried out show the girl is either aged 12 or 13 years of age. In addition, the state prosecutors say the girl was not impregnated by her 17-year-old boyfriend but rather her stepfather.

Police had started looking for  the alleged boyfriend who had impregnated her but on Wednesday, DNA tests carried out showed that the 44-year-old step father was actually the father of the child. He was subsequently arrested.

The girls’ parents didn’t have a birth certificate for her and initially told authorities she was 9.
