Teen pregnancies are becoming less and less shocking as young girls continuously get pregnant and give birth yet they ought to be playing hide and seek with children their age.
A ten-year old Columbian girl gave birth to a 5 and half pound baby after going to hospital bleeding and in pain. She gave birth without any advance care and according to Univision’s Primer Impacto, that was the first time she visited a hospital during her pregnancy. It is not clear how the ten year old girl got pregnant or who the father of her baby is. Her name is also not known.
Details about her identify were sketchy. It is said that she belonged to the Wayuu tribe which can be exempt from Colombian law in some cases. Experts it is not something new for a member of the Wayu. “We’ve already seen similar cases of Wayuu girls,” Efraín Pacheco Casadiego, director of the hospital where the girl gave birth said. “At a time when (they) should be playing with dolls, they go to having to take care of a baby. It’s shocking.”
The Wayuu who are based in the La Guajira Peninsula in the north of the country. The girl was 39 weeks pregnant when she underwent a Caesarean section. Doctors decided to carry out the risky operation because of her age – and both mother and daughter are said to be ‘doing well’. She however refused to breastfeed her newborn.
