Serena Williams may regain the world No.1 ranking for a remarkable sixth time – and become the oldest woman to top the standings – even if the American champion fails to win a sixth Australian Open crown this month,newscom.au site reports
Williams, who turns 32 in September, is a short-priced TAB favourite to win a third consecutive major after storming to Wimbledon and US Open glories.
Despite those successes – and victory in the season-ending championship – Williams is ranked No.3 behind Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova.
The dual London Olympic Games gold medallist and will replace fellow American Chris Evert as the oldest woman to be ranked No.1 if she overtakes Azarenka and Sharapova, who tend to play more tournaments than Williams.
